Garry Mac Pherson has been on the UC Santa Barbara Campus for nearly 4 1/2 years, and prior to that served for nearly a decade on the UC San Diego campus as an Associate Vice Chancellor. Garry worked in various capacities in local government in San Diego County for 33 years before joining the University of California in 2009.  Garry is committed to the campus repatriation efforts and has worked with the Repatriation Coordinator to develop a strong team and local tribal relationships.

Hugh Radde was hired in 2023 to lead campus’s repatriation efforts in compliance with the UC Policy on Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation. He is responsible for consulting with lineal descendants, tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations; identifying and reporting all Native American ancestors and other cultural items; and coordinating the repatriation of ancestors and cultural items. He serves as the point of contact for all NAGPRA inquiries at UCSB.  
Hugh has 19 years of experience in California archaeology, and has assisted in repatriation projects in southern California for the past ten years. In addition to NAGPRA work, Hugh is a Research Associate for the Pimu Catalina Island Archaeology Project. He has taught courses on California Archaeology and volunteers his time to provide training and workshops on the topic of repatriation, cultural resource management, and Indigenous archaeology.

Mike Miller has been on the UC Santa Barbara campus for 21 years. He is a member of the Skokomish Indian Tribe, a federally recognized tribe in Washington State. In 2021, Mike was asked to serve as UC Santa Barbara’s repatriation coordinator and has a passion for working with local tribes to achieve respectful and timely repatriation.

Laurie Pfeiffer joined UC Santa Barbara in 2022 after nearly 25 years working in Cultural Resource Management in Santa Barbara County and other areas of California. Emphasizing responsible site management and preservation alongside local Native monitors in the field, Laurie brings a keen understanding of the concerns and sensitivities associated with creating an efficient and respectful repatriation process.

Anthropology Department Profile

Toni Gonzalez is a Ph.D. candidate in the Anthropology Department at UCSB. Her research interests include human/environment interactions, socio-ecological knowledge, sacred geography, Indigenous archaeology, and environmental archaeology. Her current work in the Repository for Archaeological and Ethnographic Collections at UCSB entails overseeing all geographical information systems (GIS) projects; handling communication and data security contracts with the Central Coast Information Center at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History; performing curatorial duties and maintenance; drafting federal notices, inventories and summaries; and ensuring compliance with federal and state NAGPRA guidelines.

Anthropology Department Profile

Britt Holguin is a PhD candidate in the Anthropology Department at UCSB. Her research focuses on advancing isotopic databases in the forensic anthropological field in order to improve human identification efforts. Britt has a background in California Channel Islands and Santa Barbara mainland archaeology, and holds an MSc in Forensic Anthropology. Her current work in the Repository for Archaeological and Ethnographic Collections entails overseeing all human osteological identification; performing curatorial duties and maintenance; drafting federal notices, inventories and summaries; and ensuring compliance with federal and state NAGPRA guidelines.

History of Art and Architecture Department Profile

Victoria Jennings is a PhD candidate in the History of Art and Architecture Department at UCSB where she specializes in deviant burial and religious practices of Ancient Rome. Victoria has a background in museum practices of collecting, housing, and displaying human remains, along with national and international repatriation-related issues. She holds a MA (2020, UCSB) in History of Art and Architecture and a BA (2017, UCLA) in art history, with a minor in anthropology. Her current work in the Repository for Archaeological and Ethnographic Collections entails overseeing the development and organization of the collection database; archival and curatorial preservation of material; performance of all IT support; drafting federal notices, inventories, and summaries; and holding of extensive knowledge on repatriation literature, NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA policy and language.
